Over 4,000 young artists from refugee and host communities joined the UNHCR’s Youth with Refugee Art contest worldwide. The five best designs on the theme “Hope away from Home” were selected and will be turned into a collection of graphic t-shirts by their global partner UNIQLO, available for sale in 2024 to raise funds for people forced to flee. We are so thrilled that our very own Asifiwe Shema was one of the winning entries!

Illustrated Memoir author and illustrator Rojina Rai was selected by USA for UNHCR the UN Refugee Agency to have her story shared as part of their celebration of World Refugee Day 2023. Click on the photo to go to their webpage about Rojina and her story.

Cincinnati’s channel 12 did a great story about Enock’s illustrated memoir and partnerships with World Affairs Council and local business Roebling Point Books and Coffee.

This is a great news story about Illustrated Memoir alum Enock Sadiki sharing his memoir with elementary school students in a summer enrichment program.

Collaborations and Support.

We are working to establish dedicated pathways for students who complete the illustrated memoir project but want to continue to build on that experience. We believe that the illustrated memoir project can help students develop intellectual self-trust. That self- trust and self-efficacy can be bolstered by continued experiences that position students as authorities and center their knowledge and lived experience.

2022 was the second summer that an illustrated memoir alum served as a global guide fellow with the World Affairs Council of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. This year the staff at World Affairs Council worked with Enock to help him develop a lesson plan to teach elementary school children enrolled in Camp Covington summer enrichment programs about Uganda. He visited each group of children several days in a row, the final day culminating with him reading his illustrated memoir to the group. World Affairs Council raised funds to make this a paid fellowship and provide transportation support.

Maketank was able to use some of the funds from the catalyzing impact grant we received from Artswave to purchase enough copies of Enock’s memoir that all of the students he taught during the summer could take home a signed and dedicated copy of his book.
