This exhibition in the Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center’s Community Gallery will feature 30 original paintings and drawings from the past five years of the Illustrated Memoir Project. The opening celebration will take place Saturday, September 14, 2024 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. The exhibit will include numerous copies of the memoirs to read and opportunities for community members to creatively respond and share stories of their own. This exhibition is made possible in part by the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts and Artswave.

Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra We Are One: Hope

All of us have a story to tell. Hear just a few stories from international residents living in Cincinnati while seeking inspiration to share your own. Attendees will be given the opportunity to illustrate their story for a visual art project that will be presented at the festival’s culminating event. Several community partners will be in attendance to present their resources, and a mobile mural honoring immigrants and refugees will be painted by ArtWorks artists Michael Thompson and Jason Al Ghussein.

2:30-2:40pm: Kate Currie of Maketank, Inc. introduction to “Share Your Story” visual art project
2:40-3:40pm: Panel moderated by Samantha Searls (Ignite Peace) with Mirsada Kadiric (Author, I Am a Refugee: Finding Home Again in America), Ibtisam Masto (Owner, Olive Tree Catering), and Alieu Nyassi (Executive Director, Operation Crossroads Africa)
3:40-4pm: Audience learning of “Take What You Need” by Reena Esmail to be performed on 10.25 as a community chorus

Courage in the Face of Change: Storytime and discussion with local refugee youth

Rojina and Divine are local high school students who came to the US as refugees from Nepal and Zambia, respectively. They will share their illustrated memoirs, I Choose to be Courageous and Change is a Part of Life, and take questions during this hourlong story time and discussion. Books will be available to purchase after the event.

Walk with Little Amal

Join Authors and Illustrators from the Illustrated Memoir Project and hundreds of others in our community interested in welcoming and supporting immigrants and refugees to Walk with Little Amal across the suspension bridge. Amal is a 12-foot tall puppet of a 10-year old Syrian refugee who has traversed Europe and now America in search of her mother and safe shelter, raising awareness of the struggles of displaced people around the world. After crossing the bridge Amal will head to the Freedom Center for a concert by the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. For more information visit Amal’s website, The Walk. Following her reading, Zinecinnati will lead participants in a Zine making workshop to create their own stories inspired by some of the concepts in Rojina’s memoir.
