Kate Carlier Currie
Executive Director
Dr. Kate Carlier Currie is the executive director of Maketank Inc. and leads the Illustrated Memoir Project. She spent many years as a working artist, pastry chef, and small business owner before shifting her focus to working with young people. Kate co-founded Maketank Inc in 2013 to support the Oxford Kinetics Festival and associated out-of-school time programming using art and creative making to engage students with STEM and STEAM concepts. She currently leads the Illustrated Memoir Project, working with English Language Learner high school students to facilitate their creation of illustrated memoirs. Kate’s past research has focused on memoir as a means to increase intellectual self-trust and self-efficacy for new arrival students. In 2023 Kate was honored to be named Community Ally of the Year by the ELL Foundation and to be named a finalist for the Upstander Award by the Nancy and David Wolf Holocaust and Humanity Center.
Enock Sadiki
Board member and summer intern
Enock is a multilingual refugee from Uganda, and is currently attending Berea College. His on campus job is through the Center of Excellence in Learning through Service. Enock plans on majoring in education and minoring in African American studies. In addition, Enock is an accomplished athlete in soccer, cross country, and track. Enock is the published author of The Most Essential Part of My Life, a story documenting his experience of being in a refugee camp and creating a soccer league with his friends prior to moving to the US. In his spare time, Enock enjoys playing sports, hanging with his friends, and learning more about the world we live in.
Aaron Parker
Board Member
Aaron is an ESL specialist and Agriculture Career Tech Pathways educator at Aiken New Tech High School in Cincinnati. He consistently works with community partners to create opportunities for his students to thrive. Mr. Parker started the now thriving international program at Aiken, founded and continues to coach their cross country team, roasts, brews, and sells coffee with students through their Awaken at Aiken business which provides scholarships and other support for ESL students, and has overseen the development of Aiken’s thriving farm where students care for a vast array of animals and grow a huge variety of vegetables while learning valuable life skills. He is a tireless advocate for his students.
Mentalla Ismail
Mentalla is the founder and executive director of Refuge Collaborative, a non-profit focused on providing mentorship for young refugees post-resettlement. Mentalla holds a masters in public health from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and is currently a PhD candidate at NYU.
